Resources For Students

There are numerous resources available to students planning to attend college. All high school students should be in contact with their guidance counselors, who can help with a variety of things–evaluating potential majors, comparing schools, and–most important–helping with financial aid forms and scholarships.

Here are some additional links that can be useful:

Federal Student Aid  The government website that gives you details on a variety of student aid sources, including the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which everyone planning to attend college should complete.

Historic Black Colleges and Universities Common Application  If you’re considering attending an HBCU, this form lets you apply to any number of the HBCUs for only $20.

Those invited to apply to the Legends Trust Fund should:

  • Complete the scholarship application
  • Submit three letters of recommendation stating that the candidate is worthy and satisfies the criteria set forth above. (At least two of the letters should come from teachers or administrators at the school.)

THE SCHOLARSHIP SELECTION COMMITTEE (SSC)

The candidates must be interviewed by the members of the Scholarship Selection Committee (SSC).  The top candidate and an alternate will be named.  The winner will receive the Legends scholarship.  (At the discretion of the SSC and the availability of funds, the alternate may receive a scholarship of some lesser amount).  As stated above, the scholarship is open to all who meet the criteria outlined above.  The process of choosing the winner, therefore, must be fair and transparent, both in fact and in appearance.  Any member of the SSC must recuse himself or herself if any relative or close friend is among those to be interviewed.

The amount of the scholarship to be awarded depends on the amount of interest earned.  The principal, in addition to a percentage of the interest, will be left to grow the Fund.  It is hoped that the amount of the scholarship will eventually be $5,000 or more, making it a truly prestigious award.
