About The Legends Trust Fund
The Legends Trust Fund Scholarship is to be awarded to an honor student at Greenwood High School. Every student in the Top 10% of the senior class will be invited to apply.
Since this scholarship is given in honor of individuals who are deemed esteemed and legendary, the recipient of this award should likewise be outstanding in every respect. While need may be taken into consideration, it should not be the overriding consideration. The cost of a college education these days makes it difficult to afford, even for the most well resourced.
The first scholarship was awarded in 2023.
The scholarship fund is being administered through the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi, a non-profit with a four-star rating on Charity Navigator. The foundation administers a number of scholarship programs.
Those invited to apply should:
- Complete the scholarship application
- Submit three letters of recommendation stating that the candidate is worthy and satisfies the criteria set forth above. (At least two of the letters should come from teachers or administrators at the school.)
THE SCHOLARSHIP SELECTION COMMITTEE (SSC)
The candidates must be interviewed by the members of the Scholarship Selection Committee (SSC). The top candidate and an alternate will be named. The winner will receive the Legends scholarship. (At the discretion of the SSC and the availability of funds, the alternate may receive a scholarship of some lesser amount). As stated above, the scholarship is open to all who meet the criteria outlined above. The process of choosing the winner, therefore, must be fair and transparent, both in fact and in appearance. Any member of the SSC must recuse himself or herself if any relative or close friend is among those to be interviewed.
The amount of the scholarship to be awarded depends on the amount of interest earned. The principal, in addition to a percentage of the interest, will be left to grow the Fund. It is hoped that the amount of the scholarship will eventually be $5,000 or more, making it a truly prestigious award.
